A suspect accused of multiple sex crimes involving a minor is reported to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston confirmed that the incident occurred on Wednesday around 9 a.m. The unidentified subject, who is said to have committed the crimes in Lauderdale County, was posted up at an area near Taylorsville.
The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Smith County deputies collaborated to serve an arrest warrant at the subject’s location. When authorities arrived at the scene, the subject reportedly emerged with a firearm and claimed his own life, despite negotiation efforts by law enforcement.
According to law enforcement, the subject died at the scene. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the assessment of the fatal incident.
