The office of the presidency will be transferred from the 46th president to the 47th on Monday when President-elect Donald Trump is once again sworn in as commander-in-chief.
Trump, a Republican and former president from 2016-20, defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris during the November election after President Joe Biden announced he was suspending his campaign. Trump’s victory paved the way for the business tycoon-turned-politician to become the second president to leave the White House and return for a second term four years later.
Monday’s inauguration events are underway with the swearing-in ceremony set to take place when the clock strikes noon in Washington, D.C. Here’s what to know and how to tune in.
Where is the inauguration taking place?
After originally being scheduled to take place outside the U.S. Capitol, the inauguration will now be held indoors due to freezing temperatures and snowfall. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, per a request from Trump, announced Friday that the swearing-in has been moved to the Rotunda. It will be the first inauguration held inside since Ronald Regan’s in 1985, which was also due to cold weather.
Nearly a quarter million people reserved free tickets to the outdoor inauguration, but with the move inside, there is limited capacity. Capitol One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C. will be open for supporters to watch the ceremony with Trump set to stop by afterward.
When is the inauguration?
While pre-inauguration events have taken place over the weekend and continued into Monday morning, the actual swearing-in ceremony will begin with opening remarks around 10:30 a.m. CT. The oath of office will be administered to Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance at 11 a.m. CT. Trump will deliver his second inaugural address after being sworn in.
