JACKSON, Miss.- House Representatives pass Mississippi Charter School Act with a vote of 65-51.
Representatives attempted to amend several points of the bill on Monday before a final vote. Republicans attempted to table those motions while Democrats requested roll call votes.
Senate Bill 2161 will allow for students in C, D, or F ranking school districts to attend a charter school outside of their own district lines.
Transportation was a topic addressed by representatives. Rep. Jay Hughes tried to amend the bill to require charter schools to provide transportation to those students, considering the majority of them are from lower income families and would benefit from provided transportation to school.
His amendment was denied, even though it would cost the state no additional money.
The bill was requested to be read allowed before it passed on the floor.
