A former Sardis Fire Department employee has been arrested for alleged fraud, according to a release from the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor.
On Wednesday, William Clark was taken into custody for allegedly submitting fraudulent invoices to the city of Sardis through his position as secretary and treasurer for the fire department. Officials contended that Clark inflated emergency response numbers to receive payments to which he was not entitled.
“We will continue to hold the line on misuse of your tax dollars, big or small,” State Auditor Shad White said. “This is why we’ve been able to recover more money in the last six years than any other six-year period in the history of the auditor’s office.”
Clark faces up to 10 years in prison and $5,000 in fines if convicted. The auditor’s office continues to encourage those who suspect fraud to report the incidents by clicking the red button on the OSA website or by calling 1(800)321-1275.
