You wouldn’t have felt it, but an earthquake was recorded in Madison County early Thursday morning.
The Thanksgiving tremor had a magnitude of 2.5 and happened just before 2 a.m. southeast of Canton near the Ross Barnett Reservoir, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
A study from Michigan Technical University measuring earthquake magnitude says earthquakes clocked in at 2.5 or less are “usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph.”
In recent years, Madison County has become somewhat of a hotspot for minor earthquakes. Since 2015, six earthquakes have been recorded with the latest being a 2.8-magnitude tremor in 2019.
