OXFORD, Miss.- The Mississippi Department of Education has awarded a $1.2 million grant for math teachers in public schools.
The grant has been given to the University of Mississippi Center for Mathematics and Science Education. It will fund a development initiative that will help 120 math teachers across the state over the next three years.
The initiative is called Creating Continuity and Connections across Content of C4 Project. The goal is to improve students achievement in math from kindergarten to eighth grade.
The teachers from North Mississippi who are selected will participate in a two week summer institute that begins this summer. Throughout the year they will have annual conferences and follow-up activities led by other accomplished math instructors.
Julie James, CMSE professional development coordinator says they want to equip teachers with the bigger picture so that they understand where they fit in and how students best learn mathematics.
There will also be an online portion to this training.
