The Jackson City Council seat left vacant after Angelique Lee’s resignation has officially been filled by Tina Clay as she was sworn into the Ward 2 post on Friday.
Clay, a Jackson businesswoman and philanthropist, won a special runoff election against retired military officer Marcus Cheatham just over a week ago after the two were unable to eclipse the 50% mark in a crowded general election.
The new councilwoman takes over the Ward 2 seat with less than a year remaining in the term. Municipal elections in Jackson, including all city council seats and the mayoral seat, are set for 2025. No official date has been scheduled for the primary and general elections.
Clay will fill in for Lee amid legal challenges the former elected official faces stemming from an ongoing investigation into corruption in Mississippi’s capital city. Back in August, Lee was the first to face federal charges connected to a bribery scheme involving FBI informants and a downtown Jackson real estate proposal.
Another indictment followed Lee’s as three unidentified officials representing the Jackson area were listed as co-conspirators.
