On Friday, landmarks across Mississippi will light up teal in honor of November being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
The annual nationwide effort is part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Light the World in Teal program and aims to “literally shine a spotlight on Alzheimer’s disease and show support for the millions of people affected by it,” per a press release from AFA. Participating landmarks in Mississippi include:
- Grammy Museum Mississippi in Cleveland
- Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson
- Biloxi Lighthouse in Biloxi
- Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi
- Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula
“It’s wonderful to see some of Mississippi’s most well-known and iconic sites raising Alzheimer’s awareness and showing support for the millions of Americans impacted by the disease,” AFA President & CEO Charles J. Fuschillo said. “AFA thanks each of them for ‘going teal’ and literally shining a light on the issue of Alzheimer’s disease.”
The Mississippi landmarks are among more than 1,300 sites across the U.S. and 16 other counties going teal for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. The AFA also encourages people to wear teal or use social media to help raise awareness.
Nearly seven million Americans – including 63,000 Mississippians – are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. The number of people with Alzheimer’s is projected to double by 2060, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
