A Mississippi family could soon officially hold the title of having the world’s largest okra plant.
Weylon Michael, of Tupelo, took to social media Friday morning to boast that his plant, which he and his wife planted in May, has reached 17 feet in height.
The current record, as certified by Guinness World Records, is held by New Orleans native Jack Sweeney, whose okra plant measured 16 feet and four inches in 2022.
However, Sweeney’s days of holding the record look to be numbered as Mobile, Alabama residents Terry and Candace Stevens boast a 16 foot, 10 inch tall okra plant, which looks to be overshadowed by the one growing in northeast Mississippi.
As for the family’s plans for the plant, Michael told WTVA that they are working with Delta State University to record a promotional video with the college’s wildly popular mascot.
