One of four teen suspects accused of murdering former Southern Miss football player MJ Daniels in June has pled guilty to second-degree murder.
Nytavion Shaw, 16, was arrested nine days after Daniels was shot and killed on June 11 at the Ivy Row Apartments in Hattiesburg. Shaw was charged as an adult and faces up to 40 years behind bars as he awaits his sentencing to be scheduled.
Three other teen suspects in the murder case – Orlando May, 18, Allen Marcus Gardner, 17, and Samir Green, 16 – were arrested two days after the killing on capital murder and armed carjacking charges. Each of the three were denied bond and have yet to stand trial.
Daniels was found unresponsive in his vehicle just before midnight and was pronounced dead on the scene by Hattiesburg crime scene investigators. All four suspects reportedly fled in a stolen vehicle before being captured in the days following the incident.
Daniels was a standout safety for Southern Miss after starting his collegiate career at Ole Miss. The Lucedale native was a three-sport athlete and a top recruit out of George County High School in 2020.
