Tupelo is one step closer to finally becoming home to a Target outlet after years of attempts to bring the mega-retailer to northeast Mississippi.
On Tuesday, the Tupelo City Council approved a rezoning project for the site where Target is expected to be built. The move comes after store officials filed paperwork with the city construction on the site that was viewed by Target representatives back in 2023.
The proposed Target store is set to sit in a commercial area of town near the Mall at Barnes Crossing as well as a myriad of restaurants and retailers. Per documents, Target’s Tupelo site will be just under 150,000 square feet.
While the paperwork being filed and rezoning being approved does not necessarily bring the project to fruition, Tupelo Mayor Todd Jordan is confident that the popular store will be up and running sooner rather than later.
“I don’t think it’s a secret anymore since Target has put in for a site application, that we are looking at a Target. That would be a huge economic boost for us,” Jordan said on MidDays with Gerard Gibert. “There are still some things through MEMA and FEMA that we have to jump through — the flood zone area. But if it doesn’t happen, it’s not because Target or the city of Tupelo doesn’t want it to happen.”
Target has celebrated the grand opening of 10 new locations in the past year and the company is on a mission to build 300 stores in the next decade. While there is no specific timeline for the possible construction of the proposed Target outlet in Tupelo, Mississippians can visit the retailer in D’Iberville, Flowood, Hattiesburg, Horn Lake, Jackson, and Olive Branch.
