Last-ever Oakland Athletics home game features Mississippi flavor

The Athletics organization played their final home game inside Oakland Coliseum on Thursday before relocating to Sacramento in 2025 and Las Vegas long-term. A 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers wouldn’t have been possible without one Mississippi native playing far from home.

J.T. Ginn, a Flowood native and Brandon High School product, picked a historic day to record his first MLB win. A sold-out crowd of 46,889 saw Ginn dazzle across 5.1 innings of work, allowing just two runs and five hits while striking out a pair of Rangers. It was another chapter in what promises to be a sparkling career for the former Mississippi State Bulldog.

Ginn was aided by another Bulldog in the victory. 2023 All-Star Brent Rooke collected a pair of base hits and a walk in the afternoon win. Rooker, playing on his fifth MLB team since being called up in 2020, has become a fan favorite and the centerpiece of the A’s lineup since joining the club in 2022.

Another former member of the maroon and white, sixth-year big league veteran Nathaniel Lowe, squared off against his two former teammates for the Texas Rangers. Lowe drove in one of the two Ranger runs in the loss, finishing the day 1-for-4.

It was a day wrapped in nostalgia, celebration, and heartbreak for the Oakland faithful who watched their home team for the last time. The A’s have played at Oakland Coliseum since 1968 before current owner John Fisher decided to uproot the team for financial reasons following the 2024 season. The farewell voyage will conclude for the A’s with a three-game road series against the Seattle Mariners.
