Standout prep basketball player Mike Williams has committed to play for his father, former NBA star turned college coach Mo Williams, at Jackson State.

Mike, along with his younger brother Mason, won an overall state championship with Jackson Academy in the 2023-24 season before transferring to Germantown High School in July. Ahead of Mike’s senior year as a Germantown Maverick, his recruitment began to pick up steam.

According to ESPN, Williams has received offers from Mississippi State, Jackson State, and interest from Virginia, Florida State, and LSU. But on Sunday, he announced that a chance to play for his father was too good to pass up.

“As I write this I am most thankful in the universe and my spirit guides for putting the right pieces in front of me to be successful,” Mike wrote in his announcement on Instagram. “I want to thank everyone who was a part of my journey up to this point! And to all my haters, doubters, and overlookers, you all are my why. We finna go turna HBCU up.”

According to 247Sports, Williams is the No. 2 ranked combo guard in Mississippi and the No. 133 overall recruit in the 2025 high school class. His father Mo, a 13-year NBA veteran, NBA All Star, 2016 NBA Champion, and third-year coach at Jackson State, joined in on the celebration in a comment under his son’s post.

Mike’s younger brother Mason has also received an offer from Jackson State but has not announced a college commitment.

The Williams father-son duo follows in the footsteps of former Jackson State head football coach Deion Sanders and his sons Shadeur and Shiloh to compete as a family in the capital city.
