Three days ahead of the season opener, Jackson State head coach T.C. Taylor has announced Jacobian Morgan as the team’s starting quarterback.
Morgan, a familiar face to the program after solidifying himself as a starter midway through the 2023 campaign, beat out a busy quarterback room that includes Zy McDonald and Eastern Michigan transfer Cam’Ron McCoy.
Last season, Morgan led the Tigers to three wins in their last four games, totaling 842 passing yards and 10 touchdowns with one interception. He added 150 yards and six touchdowns with his legs as Jackson State finished with a 7-4 record in year one without Deion Sanders leading the team.
Sanders’ successor, Taylor, touted Morgan’s growth as a player and a leader on Monday when making the announcement. Morgan transferred to Jackson State during the 2023 offseason after spending his first two seasons at Syracuse.
“He’s developing as a leader,” Taylor said. “He’s played some football before we got him here. He’s really starting to play some football now. This is a big year for him. He understands how to better read a defense. This summer was critical for him to develop relationships with the receivers’ room. He’s gotten better in all those aspects of the game.”
Morgan and the Tigers will begin the 2024 campaign on Thursday night at Louisiana-Monroe with a 6 p.m. CT kickoff. If Jackson State wins, it will be the first time the FCS Tigers have beaten an FBS team since the NCAA split Division I in two in 1978.
