Double Decker Arts Festival in Oxford has once again been recognized as one of the region’s best events.
On Monday, the Southeast Tourism Society announced the college town’s annual spring festival as part of its 16-winner list for “Signature Events of the Southeast.” Double Decker has now been included on the list four times.
Double Decker is held annually in April and has grown into one of Mississippi’s largest festivals. Rooted in the story of a red, double-decker bus being imported from England to its stateside counterpart in 1994, the two-day extravaganza features art vendors, live music, and attracted over 100,000 people in its latest edition.
“Double Decker Arts Festival perfectly captures what makes Oxford so special and only gets better and better every year,” Visit Oxford executive director Kinney Ferris said. “We are delighted that this event, so dear to us is in its 27th year, has been recognized as a ‘Signature Event of the Southeast,’ allowing us to share Oxford’s rich culture with others.”
The latest nod comes as Double Decker has received more than 25 awards since its inception in 1997, including “Best Large Festival” by the Mississippi Tourism Association and “Best Festival” by Mississippi Magazine.
One other Mississippi event was also named a “Signature Event of the Southeast” and that was Extra Table’s March of the Mayors, which happened over five days in February and March and encouraged 51 mayors and residents to participate in a statewide food drive.
