A man is behind bars after allegedly firing shots from an airsoft gun on the grounds of a Mississippi Pine Belt school.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that an incident involving an elderly white male in possession of an airsoft pistol transpired Thursday morning at West Marion Primary School. Witnesses at the scene told WDAM that the man opened fire multiple times.
MCSO deputies and Columbia police officers promptly arrived at the school and placed the unidentified man into custody. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
While pupils have yet to report to class in Marion County, several teachers were at the educational facility for staff development sessions.
Law enforcement will release more information, including the perpetrator’s identity, once they finalize their investigation into the incident.
