The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be closing its sixth of seven disaster recovery centers recently opened in Mississippi.
The center in Hinds County, located at the Public Works Department’s parking lot in Bolton, will be closing down with those in need of assistance having until 2 p.m. on Saturday to visit the location. State and federal officials will be on-site until then to help survivors apply for federal assistance, check the status of their applications, and provide referrals to resources.
Back in June, FEMA officials opened the disaster recovery centers in response to a round of severe weather that pillaged homes and businesses across six Mississippi counties in early April. Since then, locations in Hancock County, Madison County, Neshoba County, and Scott County along with a different center in Hinds County have shut down as millions of dollars in assistance have been dished out.
One center in Humphreys County will remain in operation until further notice. It’s located at the Humphreys County Multipurpose Building at 417 Silver City Road in Belzoni. Hours of operations are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Though a majority of the disaster recovery centers will no longer be operating, FEMA will continue to receive and process appeals, assist applicants with questions, and help survivors apply for assistance.
Survivors have until August 9 to apply for aid and can contact FEMA by:
- Calling the FEMA Helpline at (800)621-3362.
- Going online to DisasterAssistance.gov
- Downloading the FEMA mobile app
- Visiting the remaining open Disaster Recovery Center in Humphreys County
