Less than one month following a federal disaster declaration for Mississippi, more than $3.1 million in federal assistance funds have been approved for survivors of the April 8-11 severe weather.

The grants, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), help pay for uninsured and underinsured losses and storm-related damage to eligible homeowners and renters in Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Neshoba, and Scott counties.

The total now includes:

  • More than $1.8 million in housing assistance to help victims pay for home repair, home replace, and rental assistance
  • More than $1.3 million in “other needs assistance,” helping victims pay for personal property replacement and other serious storm-related needs, such as moving and storage fees, transportation, childcare, medical, and dental expenses

Those affected by the April storms and tornadoes have until August 9 to apply for assistance. Victims can apply in person at the two remaining disaster recovery centers in Hinds and Humphreys counties, online at DisasterAssistance.gov, the FEMA mobile app, or by calling the FEMA helpline at (800)621-3362.
