As predicted, the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season has emerged over the western Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Alberto won’t have a direct impact on Mississippi, but the coast could experience indirect impacts like coastal flooding, locally heavy rainfall, and gusty winds.
The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the Texas coast from San Luis Pass southward to the mouth of the Rio Grande, and the northeastern coast of Mexico south of the mouth of the Rio Grande to Tecolutla. Heavy rains, coastal flooding, and gusty winds are also forecast along the coast of Texas and northeastern Mexico through Thursday. Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to make landfall early Thursday.
Alberto marks an unusually late start to the hurricane season. The last time for such a late start was in 2014, when the first storm–Arthur–formed on June 30.
