Rolling Fork is being reimbursed over $1.3 million by the federal government for debris removal following the March 2023 tornadoes that devastated much of the city.
Per a release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), $1,308,485 in debris work was completed between May 26 and Sept. 22, 2023, and included:
- 192,742 cubic yards of construction and demolition debris
- 7,841 cubic yards of vegetative debris
- 4,869 cubic yards of concrete debris
This is the latest step in Rolling Fork’s efforts at recovery as severe storms, straight-line winds, and a deadly EF-4 tornado on March 24 left over a third of the 2,000-person population without a home while destroying businesses throughout the community.

The storms also produced two EF-3s, according to the National Weather Service. 21 people in Mississippi were killed with most of the fatalities being reported in Rolling Fork.
