A known Democratic voice in Mississippi is calling for the resignation of State Rep. Keith Jackson after the lawmaker recently turned himself in over possession and use-of-stolen-property charges.
Shuwaski Young, who was the Democratic nominee for secretary of state in 2023 and for U.S. House District 3 in 2022, released a statement expressing his disapproval of Jackson. Young lives in Jackson’s district, which encompasses Kemper, Lauderdale, Winston, and Neshoba counties.
“Rep. Keith Jackson has failed in his constitutional and moral duties and now has brought great shame upon Mississippians living in District 45, my home,” Young said. “Because of his judgment, actions, and criminal indictment, the residents…now pay the price of shame by not having a State Representative in Jackson that fellow lawmakers and residents of our home district can take seriously on the merits of character and personal reputation that public officials must have in order to effectively govern.”
During an appearance on The Gallo Show Monday morning, Young was asked if he would run if Jackson stepped down and Gov. Tate Reeves called a special election for the position.
“The answer to that would be possibly yes,” Young said. “I think it’s common knowledge here in Mississippi I have been trying for quite some time to become a player in either our federal or state process and if the opportunity comes from a state legislative process, we’ll consider that too.”
Jackson’s arraignment date is scheduled for May 28. Officials allege the law enforcement officer turned politician knowingly received and possessed a stolen log-truck trailer. A grand jury also indicted two other individuals, Fredwrick Young and William Tate, allegedly involved in the incident.
District 45 voters put Jackson in office this past November over Republican Michael Cassidy, who was arrested shortly after the election for vandalizing a Satanic display inside the Iowa Statehouse. At the time of this article, Jackson had not responded to a request to interview or comment.
