A man is in custody after allegedly locking himself in his vehicle and threatening to harm himself during a police standoff in Tupelo.
Police Chief John Quaka confirmed to WTVA that the incident took place on South Gloster Street near Carnation Street Wednesday night. An officer attempted to conduct a stop on an SUV for a traffic violation, but the male suspect reportedly evaded police and crashed into another vehicle.
Quaka told the local TV station that the suspect refused to exit his vehicle and also threatened to hurt himself with a firearm and knife. Just before 11 p.m., the man, who police say was experiencing a mental health episode, was able to be negotiated out of his vehicle. He was then transported to a local hospital and now faces misdemeanor charges.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
