With help from the public, the body of a woman found on a Mississippi River barge over the weekend has been identified.
Officials with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday morning that the body crew members discovered during a routine vessel check has been identified as that of 22-year-old Hailey Silas.
Silas, a native of Oklahoma, was found Saturday morning around 7:15 a.m. as the barge was traveling upriver near Shelby Forest in Tennessee. At the time of her death, she was wearing a pink shirt with the word, “Oxford,” written on it. It is unclear if the shirt was a reference to Oxford, Mississippi.
At this time, officials do not suspect foul play was involved. This is the second body to be found in the area over the last month after Southaven native Tamia Taylor was found on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River on Sept. 23.
