A Yazoo City High School football player has issued an apology for his role in an on-field altercation during Friday night’s game at Vicksburg High School.
The Vicksburg Post reports that the fight resulted in a large fight, numerous ejections, and a suspension of play.
Just past the midway point in the third quarter, pandemonium ensued. With over five minutes remaining in the quarter, a Vicksburg defensive back intercepted a pass from Yazoo City’s quarterback. As the ball carrier ran toward the end zone, a Yazoo City offensive lineman slung him down by his facemask.
The defensive back’s teammates took exception to the perceived dirty play and began pushing and shoving the lineman who used excessive force on the tackle. Multiple players for both the Gators and Indians exited the bench and began to swing at one another.
On Saturday, Yazoo City High School senior defensive back Corderro McBride, took to social media to publicly apologize for his actions during the Friday night scuffle.
“I would like to apologize for what happened at Vicksburg last night,” McBride said via his mother’s Facebook account. “I did not mean for it to go that way. I was just being a team player. My emotions were running high. We were losing pretty bad. I will work on myself and it won’t happen again.”
As of now, it is confirmed that five Vicksburg players were suspended from Friday’s match. SuperTalk Mississippi News has reached out to the Mississippi High School Activities Association for confirmation on how many Yazoo City players were ejected from the game as a result of the fight.
All players ejected from the game will be subject to further discipline, including being suspended in each team’s upcoming matches.
The final result of the early-called game was a 35-0 victory in favor of the Gators.
