The number of West Nile cases in Mississippi has grown to 11, according to the most recent report from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH).
As of Sept. 8, cases have been found in the following counties: Grenada (1), Hinds (4), Jackson (2), Lamar (1), Panola (1), and Rankin (2). Mississippi’s first case of the calendar year was discovered on Aug. 17.
With peak West Nile virus season typically running through October, the MSDH has offered the following tips:
- Use a mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient such as DEET while you are outdoors.
- Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
- Wear loose, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
- Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
Mississippi was one of the last states in the southeastern U.S. to confirm a case of West Nile this year, with Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama all confirming cases earlier in the summer.
