Delta State Shooter Dead of Suicide After Returning to Mississippi

GREENVILLE, Miss.–Coming back across the Mississippi River from Arkansas was a mistake for Dr. Shannon Lamb, if he wanted to stay out of police custody. He’s dead after he ran from police into the woods and shot himself during the overnight hours.

Lamb was being sought for the shooting death of Prof. Ethan Schmidt on the Delta State campus Monday morning. The shooting happened about 10:20 in Schmidt’s office, said Cleveland Police Chief Charles Bingham.

Before that Lamb called Gautier Police and admitted to killing Amy Prentiss, who detectives believe may have been Lamb’s girlfriend.

Once Lamb was ID’d as the suspect, law enforcement from all over Mississippi and surrounding states began a search for the black Dodge Avenger he was driving.

Lamb apparently fled to Arkansas, but Monday night when he was coming back a car tag reader alerted police, who followed him. He bailed near Hwy. 1, very near the river, and ran into the woods, where officers heard a shot. They found Lamb dead.

Delta State was still on lockdown Monday night before anyone knew of Lamb’s whereabouts.

Classes have been canceled for today.
