The water at two popular Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches is back open to the public following a bacteria scare last week.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality recently lifted its water advisories at East Courthouse Road Beach in Gulfport and Biloxi East Central Beach in Biloxi. According to the agency, waters reached “acceptable bacteria levels” on Thursday.
“Water samples at these stations show the areas have reached acceptable bacteria levels,” a release from the MDEQ reads. “There are no beach water contact advisories on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at this time.”
While the MDEQ did not reveal what bacteria caused the scare, the Sun Herald has reported that it was likely Enterococcus, which is not necessarily dangerous but could indicate further contamination of waters located in.
As of Monday morning, all beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast can be considered safe to the public.
