The city of Rolling Fork, which was completely devastated by the late March tornado that pillaged through part of Mississippi, saw over $150,000 in donations within 24 hours of Good Morning America’s broadcast in the Delta town.
GMA, in its “Mississippi Strong” campaign, kicked off by Robin Roberts on Wednesday, has made a commitment to covering the community’s road to reopening in the aftermath of the deadly storm that took 21 lives and damaged thousands of homes.
During the campaign’s launch, Roberts issued a call to action which quickly resulted in donations spiking across several nonprofit organizations with recovery funds dedicated to providing disaster recovery relief.
The debris-removal phase of the three-phase initiative gave an inside look at the tornado’s impact on the town’s people, the cleanup efforts underway in Rolling Fork, and how the community is coming together one month following the storm that flattened the small city.
“I just want to tell you all that we are gonna be with you,” Roberts assured the Rolling Fork audience on Wednesday. “We know that this is just one phase that you are in the removal process of the debris. You will then rebuild.”
Good Morning America has pledged to revisit the Mississippi city in the coming months to highlight the town’s rebuilding efforts.
