Mississippi’s two minor league baseball teams will open the 2023 season this weekend against each other.
The Mississippi Braves, a Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, will host the Biloxi Shuckers, a Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, for a three-game weekend series in Pearl beginning Friday at 6:35 p.m. CT.
After posting records below .500 last season, both teams will look to start the new season on the right track. In 2022, the Mississippi Braves followed up their Southern League Championship season with a 62-74 record and finished in last place in the Southern League South Division.
The Shuckers had a better season than the Braves, but not by much. Coastal Mississippi’s minor league squad mounted a 67-68 record and finished second-to-last in the division, five games ahead of the Braves.
Both teams were scheduled to play exhibition matches against college foes on Wednesday. However, sod issues at Trustmark park caused the Mississippi Braves to have to cancel the Hank Aaron Tribute game versus Jackson State. The very same unplayable conditions also caused last Tuesday’s game between Southern Miss and Ole Miss to be ruled a no-contest in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Meanwhile, the Shuckers’ exhibition versus the defending NJCAA Division II national champion Pearl River Community College will be played at MGM Park in Biloxi on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CT.
