Thousands of Mississippians were negatively impacted by Friday’s severe weather, prompting some scammers to manipulate people by posing as government entities looking to provide people with disaster relief.
In response to efforts by bad actors to scam state residents affected by severe weather damage, State Auditor Shad White has released the following information to protect people from being conned:
- Disaster grants never require payment to be eligible.
- FEMA representatives that visit your home or call you will have your FEMA application number.
- FEMA inspectors are never authorized to collect banking information from you.
