One Mississippi teen is rising in popularity across the world after being featured in a song on one of Skrillex’s most recent albums.
According to Prentiss Furr, a 16-year-old Jackson native, his efforts in creating music over the years have paid off with shoutouts from numerous artists, including a recent direct message from Justin Bieber on Instagram.
“He hit me on Instagram and I sent him a demo, and he made a song out of the demo that I had,” Prentiss explained. “I guess he showed it to Justin Bieber and that’s how Justin Bieber found me.”
The demo was featured in a song called “3am” on Skrillex’s album Don’t Get Too Close, which included Prentiss’ vocals with an upbeat musical track in the background.
Prentiss explained that he’s been honing his craft for seven years, releasing dozens of songs with collaborations from several artists since he was only nine years old.
“I did feel like I had something when it came to music,” Prentiss said. “I knew I had an ear for it. The hard part at that point was figuring out how to get my voice working and figuring out how to learn production. I had gone two years into it with zero music theory at all, so I kind of had to learn it a little backwards.”
The teen added that he has fallen in love with singing for live audiences over time as his career has begun to take off, with his next performance set to take place at Hal and Mal’s in Jackson on April 8.
“I wouldn’t say that I had stage fright, I was never scared of a stage,” Prentiss stated. “I was just like scared that people wouldn’t want to sit for 45 minutes and watch me perform a set, especially with me being so young.”
