Legislation that would have allowed liquor sales on Sunday has died in the Mississippi Legislature.
House Bill 384, authored by Rep. Brent Powell, R-Brandon, was introduced to authorize any Mississippi county, municipality, time, or other political subdivision that sells alcohol Monday through to be able to sell liquor on Sundays between 1 and 6 p.m.
The bill passed the House of Representatives by 71-37 vote before dying in the Senate Finance Committee.
Powell expressed his discontentment with the unwillingness of some members of the legislature to even consider changing state laws that he deems to be outdated.
“I really don’t know what the pushback is on it other than that’s just what we have now and nobody really wants to move forward on it,” Powell said on The Gallo Show. “My constituents can go get medical marijuana [on Sunday], but they can’t go get a bottle of wine and it makes no sense to me.”
Residents in favor of Sunday liquor sales will rely on state lawmakers to take up the matter again in the 2024 legislative session unless a special session is called.
