MEMPHIS, Tenn.–Another chapter in the story of Elvis Presley, one of Mississippi’s most famous sons, was turned Wednesday morning at Graceland when the U.S. Postal Service unveiled a new stamp called “Elvis Forever”. It’s the second Elvis stamp. The first one was released in 1993.
“Born in Tupelo, Mississippi and raised in Memphis, he became one of the most recognized and beloved people on our planet,” said Megan Brennan, postmaster general.
“It’s impossible to think of music today without rock n’ roll and it’s impossible to think of rock n’ roll without Elvis. He inspired millions to challenge the boundaries of expression.”
Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton said Elvis was worthy of honor in three cities.
“Of course, we honor him down in Tupelo. We know the story of Vernon and Gladys, where it all got started. Out was out in Vegas a couple of months ago, and believe it or not, Elvis still presides over a few weddings out there,” nsaid Wharton.
Elvis’ ex-wife Priscilla Presley spoke at the event, reminiscing about the day the city changed a stretch of Hwy. 51 to Elvis Presley Blvd. in 1968.
“Elvis was standing out there and he said ‘My own street. My very own street.'”
Presley helped unveil the black and white stamp, which is from a 1955 photo of a young Elvis.
