BELZONI, Miss.–A good chunk of the western half of Mississippi is under a heat advisory and for the weekend, when temps go up to well over 100, that area will probably get bigger. With hotter highs comes more troubles. It’ll also be dry and that could mean fire danger.
Fourteen Mississippi counties are under a burn ban, which means you can’t burn anything outside, with a few exceptions.
Amite and Lincoln counties were added to that list Thursday. It also includes Rankin, Humphreys, Franklin, Smith, Adams, Copiah, Yazoo, Lawrence, Simpson, Jefferson Davis, Hinds and Madison counties.
The best advice is don’t go outside during the hottest part of the day this weekend, if you can help it.
“It’s very important to stay hydrated and to avoid strenuous outdoor activities or even being outside at all during the heat of the day, if possible,” said Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
She said some places could reach 102 Saturday and Sunday, and there will be very little rain.
