Flu activity in Mississippi has surged to a 13-year high, according to the State Department of Health.
The last time that flu activity in Mississippi was this high at this point in the calendar year was during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.
To combat the spread, MSDH is encouraging those who have not already to get a flu shot whether it be through one of their county health departments, a local pharmacy, or a private physician.
“In Mississippi, we are already seeing increased flu activity, including reports of increased hospital admissions for flu-related illness and increased emergency department visits,” MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said. “We recommend that all Mississippians get their flu shots every year because this can be and is beneficial in protecting against severe illness, complications, and hospitalizations.”
So far this season, at least 2.8 million people across the nation have fallen ill with the flu, 23,000 have been hospitalized, and 1,300 people have died from the virus, according to CDC.
