SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – Investigators looking into the what happened hours after Tony Goode was detained by police in Southaven say it is unlikely police misconduct led to his death.
District Attorney John Champion said preliminary autopsy results, released Tuesday, indicated Goode, 30, of Memphis, died of either a heart or lung condition.
Goode and his wife were on their way home from a Widespread Panic concert Saturday when she said her husband unexpectedly got out of the vehicle she was driving and started to act erratically. Someone passing by called police.
The family’s attorney, Tim Edwards, had said police tied Goode up and placed him face-down on a stretcher. Goode, who had asthma, reportedly told police he couldn’t breathe. He died two hours later at a DeSoto County hospital. Edwards had said the family believed Goode died from positional asphyxiation.
