Southern Miss scored its most points since 2017 on Saturday as the Golden Eagles defeated Northwestern State 64-10.
Four different quarterbacks combined for 400 of the team’s 587 yards during the win. Zach Wilcke, who received his second start of the season, completed 9 of 18 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown. Ty Keyes had a career-best three touchdowns on 6 of 9 passing with 192 yards off the bench. The Taylorsville product also added one score on the ground.
With both quarterbacks playing well against the Golden Eagles’ only FCS opponent of the season, head coach Will Hall did not provide any insight after the game on who would start next week against Tulane.
“I’ve got no idea, man,” Hall said when asked whether Wilcke or Keys would start a week from now. “We have a whole week of practice, and practice matters a whole lot here.”
Jakarius Caston led the way among the wideouts, catching six passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen May had his first two catches of the season, both of which went for touchdowns. Zay Franks, a true freshman out of Magee, also found the end zone for his first career score.
On the ground, Frank Gore, Jr. rushed for a game-high 82 yards and one touchdown. Gore is now third in the Sun Belt with 270 yards through three games.
The Southern Miss defense enjoyed another solid performance, limiting the Demons to just 234 yards while forcing two turnovers.
