Going forward, Mississippi residents who need help paying their rent or utilities will no longer be able to apply for the federal government’s rental assistance program.
Governor Tate Reeves instructed the Mississippi Home Corporation two weeks ago to stop accepting applications after Monday, arguing that the decision will force people back into the workforce.
“RAMP was originally intended to help those struggling as a DIRECT result of COVID,” Reeves wrote in a Facebook post. “Yet, like so many other government programs on Democrats’ wish lists, it fundamentally lost its way and no longer serves its original purpose. Mississippians pay enough for their own rent. They shouldn’t have to pay for others’ too.”
The decision to halt Mississippi’s participation in the rental assistance program will force the state to return up to $130 million to the federal government.
