State Takeover Possible for Tunica District, Superintendent Throws in the Towel

TUNICA, Miss.–A state takeover is possible for the Tunica County School District, and now superintendent Steve Chandler is resigning, effective immediately. The state may put the entire school board out of a job, if the governor approves.

The state Board of Education said Thursday that the Commission on Accreditation will have a meeting on the district’s performance next Wednesday and discuss the districts performance and whether or not it warrants a takeover.

That would mean that a conservator would be appointed to get the district back in shape.

Right now the district is in violation of 25 of the 31 accreditation standards.

Chandler is an elected superintendent.
