HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The final chapter of the saga of finding a new police chief in Hattiesburg looks to have finally come to a close. The Hattiesburg City Council approved Mayor Johnny DuPree’s latest and final nominee for police chief, Anthony “Stoney” Parker.
The vote was unanimous, but it was a 4-0 vote instead of 5-0. Councilwoman Deborah Delgado was not in attendance.
Parkey was nominated by Mayor DuPree back on June 11th. With heat being felt by the circuit court for him to produce a qualified nominee, DuPree had been held in civil contempt of court. If there hadn’t been a police chief nominee approved by the city council by July 10th, sanctions would’ve been set in place by Judge Hillburn that would invoke a daily fine of $150.
Parker was previously the Chief of Police in Crystal Springs, and had been in that position since 2009. He also has worked for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, and Mississippi Highway Patrol. He graduated from USM in 1979, where he was a football player.
City Council President Kim Bradley told WDAM-TV that Parker will take over as police chief over the next few weeks, and will make $85,000 a year.
