JACKSON, Miss.- If you own a motorcycle, but only drive it recreationally, Monday is your chance to break it out on your way to work. The Mississippi Department of Transportation is encouraging the state to join in on the annual event, Ride to Work Day.
It traditionally happens on the third Monday in June, and was started to give motorcyclists a chance to show off the fuel-efficiency of a motorcycle compared to your standard car, truck, or SUV.
This event saves around 60,000 gallons of fuel every year when commuters choose to ride a motorcycle or bicycle to work. Ridetowork.org says that if every day were “Ride to Work” day, they could save up to 15 million gallons of gas.
Riding a bicycle to work, while your commute would take longer, is virtually cost-free, and gives you great exercise worked right into your daily routine. So the event saves money and promotes good health.
So Monday, June 15th, you can join in the cause and ride your motorcycle or bicycle to work. Drivers can also help by safely sharing the road with cyclists.
