OXON HILL, Md.–The nation’s top student spellers had their yearly championship and Dev Jaiswal of Louisville held his own. Rated as one of the country’s best, he placed fifth in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held in Maryland Thursday.
The word that got stumped him: iridocyclitis.
Jaiswal was the winner of the state spelling bee this year and finished first in the preliminary round.
The winners of this year’s contest were Gokul Venkatachalam, of Missouri, and Vanya Shivashankar of Kansas. It was a tie for the second year in a row, something that had not happened for 52 years until 2014.
