Tornadoes in Mississippi: Twisters Hit Near Amory, Damage Homes and a School

AMORY, Miss.–Storms reported Monday in Amory contained two tornadoes, apparently from the same storm. Residents were still picking up Tuesday morning because, even though the tornadoes were weak, they caused plenty of damage.

About 60 homes were damaged, said a report from MEMA. Two of those were destroyed.

“The first tornado occurred southwest of Amroy,” said Corey Chaskelson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Memphis office. “That tornado was rated as EF-0, with maximum winds about 75 mph.”

He said the second tornado was rated an EF-1, with winds at 95 mph.

“But there is still some investigation going on with the second tornado, so there may be additional updates today.”

There was minor damage to West Amory Elementary School and two businesses were also damaged, said the MEMA report.

Damage in Smithville was attributed to straight-line winds.

Storms also swept through the Jackson Metro area overnight, downing some trees in Hinds County.

“The most notable damage was to the canopy that was torn of the Exxon at the Gluckstadt exit on 55,” said Mike Edmunston, National Weather Service meteorologist with the Jackson office.

No tornadoes were reported in the overnight storms.
