Florida State Rallies To Beat Southern Miss 5-2 In Regional Opener

USM Losses Opening Game Of Oxford Regional To FSU

Southern Miss started the Oxford regional with a 5-2 loss to Florida State.

The Florida State Seminoles fell behind early, but were able to slug their way back on a trio of homers. The No. 3 seed Seminoles (31-22, 20-16 in ACC) managed just seven hits against No. 2 seed Southern Miss (37-20, 22-9 in Conference USA) during the game. Five of their seven hits went for extra bases.

Early in the game, it looked as if USM had everything under control.

USM ace Hunter Stanley kept the FSU hitters in check but FSU turned the tables on the third trip through the batting order.

Behind sixth-inning homers from third baseman Logan Lacey and Elijah Cabell and an eighth-inning bomb from catcher Matheu Nelson to help the Seminoles rally for the win.

On the mound, the Seminoles allowed nine hits, but walked just two batters and stranded ten men on base.

Southern Miss will look to turn things around when they face the loser of Ole Miss and Southeastern Missouri on Saturday, needing a win to keep their season alive.

With the victory, FSU is in the winner’s bracket of the Oxford Regional where they’ll face the winner of Friday night’s game between No. 12 overall seed Ole Miss and Southeast Missouri State Saturday at 6 p.m. and the winner will advance to the regional final.
