BILOXI, Miss.–Biloxi has replaced long-time mayor A.J. Holloway with Andrew “FoFo” Gillich, a Republican. Meanwhile, in northeast Mississippi, the race for Congress won’t be decided until June after neither of the top two candidates got more than 50 percent of the vote.
In the Biloxi race, Gillich had 4, 319 votes and his opponent, Winfield “Wendy” Swetman, had 2,914 votes, reported News Mississippi affiliate WOSM. The results were tabulated in about an hour.
“In a city of 45,000 people, only 7,223 went to the polls,” said WOSM manager Kipp Gregory.
The results were not certified as of Wednesday morning.
In the Congressional race to replace the late Alan Nunnelee, Walter Zinn was the leading candidate, but not by much. He had 17 percent of the vote. He’s headed to a runoff with Trent Kelly, who had 16 percent and got the endorsement of Nunnelee’s widow.
There were 13 people running, and if you vote in the district, you’ll have to go back to the polls June 2 to decide between the two. Though the race is not party-based, Zinn is the only Democrat to run, while Kelly is a Republican.
