The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has concluded its 2020 Memorial Day Travel Enforcement Period.
“We did see an increase in traffic over the Memorial Day weekend,” MHP Captain Johnny Poulos said. “As far as the numbers, we could have done better, and we absolutely could have done worse.”
From 12:01 a.m. on Friday to 12:00 a.m. on Monday, MHP issued 6,511 citations with 153 DUI arrests. The period also consisted of 157 crashes, 51 injuries, and two fatalities.
“Unfortunately, we did have two fatalities during the period,” Poulos said.
Poulos also believes the traffic will continue to increase due to both the lifted stay-at-home order, as well as the time of the year.
“We know we are going to be dealing with that increase in traffic, because now, we are getting into the summer months,” Poulos said. “Now that the restrictions are starting to ease, people are going back to work, so again, you’re going to see an increase in traffic and more vehicles on the roadways.”
