May is Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month, and Dr. Victor Sung, who is the director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Huntington’s Disease Clinic, joined The Gallo Show today to talk about the seriousness of the disease.
“Currently, there is no cure, but we understand a lot about the disease because of the genetics,” Sung said. “There are a lot of exciting things happening working towards the cure. We all feel pretty confident that we are getting closer to it.”
On average, 30,000 people suffer from the rare, genetic disease that gradually breaks down the brain’s nerve cells. Typically, the disease causes movement, cognitive, and psychiatric disorders.
