While retail businesses are up and running in Oxford, Mayor Robyn Tannehill has decided not to open restaurants just quite yet amid the ongoing pandemic.
“Our board has been very cautious,” Tannehill said. “We have operated under the understanding that if we overreact or do too much, we will likely never know, but if we do too little, it will certainly be obvious.”
Tannehill said that the board is going to meet on Saturday morning, and she suspects “they [restaurants] will open on Monday.”
“Seeing the large number of spikes in the state this past week, our board was just a little hesitant,” Tannehill said. “We have been very strict in Oxford, and I think you can see in our numbers that that has fared well for our community.”
As of today, Lafayette County has had 89 cases of COVID-19, and Tannehill thinks the numbers should not affect restaurants opening in the near future.
“I don’t believe the data in Lafayette County will support waiting to open,” Tannehill said.
She said that there are only six active cases currently in the Oxford city limits.
