JACKSON, Miss.–Protests in favor of keeping Dan Jones as chancellor at Ole Miss may have worked, and so may have the intervention of some people with influence. The state college board may be offering Jones a two-year contract extension, various sources told News Mississippi.
Jones was flown to Jackson Wednesday and met with the board through Thursday, said the sources. If he is offered a new contract and accepts, he may be compelled to offer a public apology to the IHL board.
Exactly what that apology would be for was unclear.
Support has been growing for Jones in the last week after the announcement Friday that his contract would not be renewed and would run out in September, leaving him without a job. Sincethen, Jones has said he would like to keep his job and there have been threats to pull funding from the school, along with letters of support from alums, as well as a Wednesday student and faculty protest that brought over 2,500 people to the Lyceum at the Ole Miss campus.
There has been no official word from the college board.
