Equal Opportunity for Students With Special Needs Goes to the Governor’s Desk

JACKSON, Miss– After narrowly dodging deadlines and arguments in both the state house and senate, the bill that allows vouchers for $6,500 to families with students with special needs is headed to the Governor’s desk.

The bill passed 30-18. The bill was intended for students with special needs to be given equal opportunity at graduation, by giving vouchers for those students to receive additional therapy, tutoring, or be moved to a private school.

The bill was greatly debated last year, and died in the legislative session just as it was coming to an end.

Governor Phil Bryant has already expressed that he’d sign the bill if it made it to his desk.

“These children and their families don’t need more education bureaucracy,” says Governor Bryant,” “they need real options now.”
